The Cartesian system
A fundamental system that provides a method of representing positions of points on a two-dimensional surface or in three-dimensional space. It forms the basis for geometry which is concerned with shape, sizes and angles.
The system consists of 3 axis lines that represent the 3 dimensions of space. The location or placement of any point or object in space can be accurately indicated and communicated with the use of this simple system.
This simple geometric tool is the foundation of our understanding of space, direction and perspective.
Grids, on paper or on computer programs, used for design, planning and implementation of infrastructure projects have the Cartesian system as the underlying concept.
